Through an original analysis of ancient tragedy, it describes a characteristic modern attitude towards life: the "tragic sense of life," according to which only life gives meaning to the world, but life itself has no meaning.
According to Nietzsche, this sense is expressed primarily through music. For this reason, "The Birth of Tragedy" has had a decisive influence on aesthetic perceptions from its time to the present day.

This edition accompanies the exceptionally well-crafted new translation of the work by Christos Marcello, with a study by Markos Tsatsos on the position of "The Birth of Tragedy" in the philosophy of music, in contrast to Wagner's view, a study by Pierre Osmo on the position of Nietzsche's philosophy within the framework of the "philosophies of life," in comparison to Bergson's view, and an introduction by George Faraklas that attempts to show how the argument of Nietzsche's philosophy is derived from the initial position of "The Birth of Tragedy" regarding knowledge.
