Description

Strangely, while the relationships between the Etruscans and Greek civilization are numerous and deep, the much-discussed topic of their origin has not seriously concerned Greek researchers until today. The initial, central hypothesis of this collective work, which also constitutes the first extensive scientific negotiation of the subject in Greece, can be summarized in the question: Did the mysterious precursors of what would later become the basis of the so-called Etruscan civilization originate from wandering national-professional groups of metalworkers, who, after passing through Greek territory and being deeply influenced by it, eventually settled in the metal-rich land of Etruria? It may not be coincidental, indeed, that the also metal-rich island of Lemnos, the only point in Greek territory where inscriptions in Etruscan language were found according to Homer, was inhabited by the "wild-voiced Sintians," a people particularly beloved by the god of metalworkers, Hephaestus. Starting from this idea and seeking the traces and identity of the mysterious ancestors of the Etruscans, the contributors of this work found themselves retracing them on increasingly unmapped paths, leading to conclusions they had not even suspected when they started their research project a few years ago.
