Description

December 1999: Mrs. Saltapida, a well-known TV star, is forced by unknown letter writers to donate a large quantity of necessary books to public libraries as "retribution" for her popular program. Similarly, a conscienceless university doctor who regularly collects his "envelopes" is threatened that if he does not return the money to his patients, the entire Medical School amphitheater will hear a recorded document of his illegal transactions. Meanwhile, a wealthy tax officer sees his living room in his new penthouse catch fire on Christmas Eve, while a corrupt member of the "Other Attica" party, under the pressure of serious threats, is forced to finance what he hates the most: organizations that protect wild animals.

All this happens in "The Data of Our Lives" because some retirees all over Greece make the almost crazy decision to intimidate corrupt politicians, urban planners, tax officers, doctors, media stars, etc., by sending them threatening letters demanding the "owed" payments, as they call them, from citizens who have suffered from them. One of these retirees writes in a characteristic letter, forcing the modern reader to automatically make the parallel with today:

Ruthless criminals to us, and hypocrites to foreigners, but clear; you couldn't confuse them with anything else. These people here work within the law, they're like the American mafia that launders its profits in completely legal businesses. That's why I think we curse these letters, this schizophrenia of legality that kills the soul...
