Description

"The Force of Law" has the power of a section of Derridean philosophy of law. It deals with the relationship between deconstruction and justice, making the fundamental distinction but also the interconnection between justice and law, considering the former as non-deconstructible and the latter as deconstructible. Derrida deconstructs Walter Benjamin's text "Critique of Violence," highlighting the inherent relationship between violence and law, and therefore with authority, power, sovereignty, and especially with the state-national. The connecting link between the two texts is the distinction between justice and law, which both connects and radically separates the positions of the two philosophers. Derrida criticizes Benjamin because he promises the complete dissolution of law in the name of justice. His critique concerns the crisis of parliamentarism, policing, war and peace, revolution, messianism, and Auschwitz."
