Description

Night was falling. The noise from the cypresses had diminished. The candles of the sky were lit. Everything was milk... milk... indigo... and sparks. The river murmured secret mutterings in its sleep. That night, the child did not sleep... the whole night. He wrote his most bitter, his greatest fairy tale...
At dawn, he set off. He was... consoled. He had managed to count the stars all night... To count them all... slowly... one by one... All of them... And he found them correct.

"... Lountemis wrote as he breathed, he never stopped... Almost every one of his books is a testimony from his long odyssey in the realms of exile - inside and outside of Greece... Now, when children count the stars, they will know that what they are missing is in their library"
Stratis Tsirkas)

"Menelaos Lountemis was one of the finest of the generation of Greek writers who encapsulated in their work the thirst and struggles of our people for freedom, democracy, and humanism..."
Dido Sotiriou

"[...] Lountemis conveys the heartbreaking life experience he has gained in a beautiful but difficult world, the intoxication of life called passion: love, pain, freedom, success, destruction. [...] He lets his heart speak again about its passions, drawing from the independent reserve of his childhood experience"
Dimitris Rautopoulos

My first book in elementary school in 1985..
One of the best of its kind, although it requires a little more intelligence than elementary school to understand it.

I received it as a gift from elementary school to high school, but it was quite difficult to read due to the dialects it combines. I started reading it again at the end of high school. I believe that at that time it can be understood, appreciated, and spread its teachings better. One of the best literary works.

I read it for the first time when I was 10 years old. I have to say that it is a bit difficult book, it is better for older children. Also, keep in mind that it contains profanities at some points (I say this because I know that many people intend it for children and they might be surprised if they are asked about the meaning of a curse word or if they start uttering various things). When I read it again, I understood its value. It depicts sarcastically, harshly, and bitterly the Greece of that era. It is one of my favorites.

I bought it for my daughter (6th grade) because her teacher asked them to read it. I think it is more suitable for middle school children. Quite overrated.
