Description

When the voices call you, don't answer…

After the death of his parents in the fire at their house, fourteen-year-old Richard Elovd goes to stay with his uncles in the remote town of Ballantyne. Richard quickly gains the reputation of a pariah, and when a classmate, Tom, disappears, everyone suspects the new angry boy. No one believes him when he tells them that the phone booth at the edge of the forest sucked him in like he was in a horror movie. No one, except Karen, an equally lonely classmate who encourages Richard to follow the clues the police refuse to investigate. He traces the number Tom called to prank to an abandoned house in the Forest of Mirrors. There he catches a fleeting glimpse of a terrifying face in the window. And then the voices start whispering in his ear… When another classmate disappears, Richard must find a way to prove his innocence – and save his mind from madness – as he battles the dark magic that is choking Ballantyne and plotting its destruction. But in the end, perhaps Richard is not the most reliable narrator of his own story…

The plot keeps your interest, especially in the first two parts of the book! It reads very easily! It reminds me a bit of a teen horror movie!

I found it wonderful!!! Although it is small in size, only 271 pages (I am a fan of longer books) ... I think it is inventive and enjoyable!!! I really enjoyed it, as I turned the pages and thought about how all of this belongs to the pen of Nesbo ... an author who is considered one of the masters of crime literature, but who decided to step out of his comfort zone and deal with a text that reminds a little of Stephen King, a little of Lovecraft in some parts. Especially in the first part of the book, I felt something from the aura of "IT" by Stephen King. It is a fantasy and horror text, I would say, but it doesn't just stay in that. Bravo to him, he surprised me positively. I hope it gives birth to more novels like this, longer in length because I admit that Night House left me wanting more. It is divided into 3 parts, the first two keep you captive with question marks until the final solution and explanation that comes with the twist of the third part. There, it answers everything that you may wonder throughout the hero's journey. I can't help but give it 5 stars, I easily recommend it. It doesn't pretend to be a masterpiece aiming for distinctions and Nobel prizes, but that doesn't mean it's not enjoyable!!!

Joe Nesbo... differently! A story that winks at those of Stephen King (whom I adore btw). No relation to Nesbo's classic detective novels. Those who enjoy stories with some post- or super-natural element will definitely like this book with its amazing final twist!
