Jordan 1 Retro

The shoe that started it all

The Air Jordan 1 is undoubtedly the most important shoe in the history of footwear. It was not only Michael Jordan's first shoe from Nike, but it was also the beginning of innovation for Nike itself. The Air Jordan 1 was designed as a basketball shoe for the then-rookie Michael Jordan and went on to kickstart the crazy and massive retro trend we live in today, where new colors and collaborations seem to be released every week.

The story behind the design

The Air Jordan 1 was designed by Peter Moore who came up with the idea to "break the color barrier in footwear." You see, in the early 1980s, bright colors existed on canvas shoes or running shoes. When it came to basketball shoes, the color was almost always white.

The "Wings" logo

While most components of the shoe were pulled from other Nike designs such as the Air Force 1, Nike Dunk, Air Ship, and Nike Vandal, the one thing that was entirely exclusive to the Air Jordan 1 series was the logo that Moore sketched for Michael. The "Wings" logo as we know it today features a basketball with wings, the perfect metaphor for Michael "Air" Jordan and his new signature shoes. The Air Jordan 1 was the only Air Jordan model to include both the Nike Swoosh and the Jordan Wings logo. The now-famous Jumpman logo would first appear in 1988 with the Air Jordan 3 model.

"Banned"

The "banned"

First released in 1985 in the Bred colorway (black+red=bred), they quickly became known as "Banned". You see, every time Jordan stepped onto the court wearing the black, red, and white shoes, he was fined $5,000 for violating the NBA's uniform policy, a fine that Nike was happy to pay each time to increase the buzz around the Air Jordan 1.

The advertisement and commercial success

"On October 15, Nike created a revolutionary basketball shoe," says the narrator. "On October 18, the NBA banned it. Fortunately, the NBA can't stop you from wearing them. Air Jordans. By Nike."

That was it. The shoes became a sensation despite the high price of $65 for that time. Since then, the history of Nike itself changed, Jordan was named NBA Rookie of the Year and went on to have the legendary career we all know, the Jordans became collectible (some editions were even released on Saturdays so that most people wouldn't be working and kids wouldn't miss school), and the status of the shoes changed both on and off the court. The rest is history...

This review is about the colour: Beige

The aj1s are not worth the regular price at all, but now that they are starting to stay in stock, they are also dropping in price.

This particular one is made of high-quality vachetta leather according to Nike, although they have probably coated it with another material based on what I read. The black part is not leather but a hard twill fabric, which makes it resistant to wrinkling and possibly gives the shoe longevity as it appears more sturdy. I should mention that they may feel a bit tighter due to the thicker twill that makes the shoe bulkier.

In terms of comfort, it's so-so. The aj1s are not known for their comfort compared to af1, New Balance, Asics, Saucony, etc. I would recommend them on sale, although there are more affordable options in a similar style.
