Description

On the morning of October 28, 1940, with the mobilization under the state of frenzied popular enthusiasm, the second world war began for Greece. It was followed by a long, difficult, painful, but also glorious journey for the "great little fighting nation" of the Greeks (as the American ambassador Lincoln Mac Veagh called them, amazed by the bravery of the Greek army). That journey would lead from the snow-covered mountains of Pindus and western Macedonia to northern Epirus and later to the fortifications of the Metaxas Line and the island of Crete, the Greek archipelago of the Aegean Sea and the mountains of free mountainous Greece, and from there to the Near and Middle East, given that the struggle did not cease even after the occupation of the entire Greek territory by the Germans, Italians, and Bulgarians. Nevertheless, the actions of the esteemed Sacred Band, that exemplary unit of commandos, which was formed in 1942, mainly by officers from all branches of the military and became legendary for its military actions in North Africa and the Middle East, as well as in the Greek archipelago, while actively participating in the liberation of the Greek islands of the Aegean, remain unknown to many today. The highlighting of the military operations of the Sacred Band is the subject of this scientific monograph as a minimum tribute to the Greek fighters who fought and fell for faith and country and as a final reminder of "the virtue they have left behind".
