Description

In recent years, we have observed an increase in the examples of "multi-local" ethnography in Greece. The reexamination of the concepts of "space" and "place" in ethnographic research has encouraged a shift from established, classical forms of anthropological research towards new, mobile, and fluid constructions of ethnography. The opening up to studies of migration and other mobile populations, which create images of cultural difference in contemporary Greece, has established new methodological approaches to the issue of the formation of ethnic identities and their connection to national policies.

The researchers participating in this volume have themselves been involved in various forms of "critical" and often "multi-local" ethnography, and have shown that their experiences challenge the traditional boundaries of on-site research identity. Their texts are examples of contemporary anthropological research, mainly but also historical and criminological research conducted by Greek researchers and concerning Greece, neighboring European societies, and others, more distant. The ethnographic fields included in this volume address issues such as "culture, nationalism, and post-colonial discourse," "the relationship between anthropology and history," "migration, multiculturalism, and "new" European identities," as well as "anthropology, representations, and art."
