Description

The third volume of "Greek Identity" is dedicated to the work of Thucydides. Cornelius Kastoriadis attempts an original analysis of the "Funeral Oration," attributed by the ancient historian to Pericles, to show to what extent the great Athenian creation of the 5th century had self-awareness.

Without indulging in anachronisms and projections that characterize modern interpretations, the philosopher discovers in Thucydides a world that remarkably resembles our own, in which certain goods are considered valuable, while they have no value outside their context, where power alone prevails; a world in which the rivalry between centers of power leads to open conflict, with rationality inextricably intertwined with passions.

The book gathers the lectures of Cornelius Kastoriadis at the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (EHESS) during the academic year 1984-1985.

In the "Critique" editions, the first and second volumes of "Greek Identity," "From Homer to Heraclitus," and "The City and the Laws" are available.
