Description

With a focus on the new realities in foreign policy, which increasingly attract the interest of researchers in Greece, this book explores how Greek media (press and television) cover and represent an area that is sensitive and perhaps taboo in Greek foreign policy - the so-called "national issues". Specifically, it examines and analyzes:

First, the nationalist perspective through which traditional approaches to Greek foreign policy issues are approached, as well as the way in which media mediation has contributed to the establishment, over the past decades, of a nationalist perspective in the political system and public opinion, and how this perspective has become "naturalized", considered self-evident and unproblematic. Second, the quantitative expression of the nationalist approach to foreign policy and the focus on "national issues", the qualitative characteristics of the ideological, nationalist perception of foreign policy that dominates the media, and their alignment with the government and the nation-state in general. Third, the subject matter and framing of news about "national issues", as well as the formal structure of news and particularly their informative and entertaining composition. International issues, as the study reveals, are covered to a small extent in Greek news, but the same does not apply to the so-called "national issues". This may not be a Greek phenomenon, but in Greece it takes on very large dimensions, to the extent that "national issues" are catalytically dominant in the overall international and external affairs. At the same time, the existence of a phenomenon that can be characterized as the "national issue of the day" is observed, especially through the coverage of the Macedonian and Cypriot issues: the subject of negotiation in foreign policy can change, as a foreign policy issue considered "national" consistently occupies the most important position among the external and international issues of journalism, both in terms of the extent of presentation and the importance attributed to it.
