It is unfair how unknown this series is and it really deserves a chance. The Etrian Odyssey series is a "rebirth" of dungeon crawlers. (Those who played Wizardry and Ultima on PC know.) You create a team of 5 people consisting of classic RPG classes (healer, support, tank, etc.) and with them, you embark on an adventure to explore dangerous labyrinths and uncover the secrets of a colossal ancient tree called Yggdrasil.
Of course, the truth is that you don't play this game for the story. One characteristic that makes Etrian Odyssey different from other games of its kind is the way it utilizes the touch screen of the 3DS. The game allows you to draw your own maps! It may sound boring to some, but if you approach it with the right mindset, you will feel like a true explorer. If it tires you just thinking about it, you can disable it from the settings so that the maps are drawn automatically, but you will be missing out on a big part of the game.
Etrian Odyssey IV offers a deep customization system. The characters created by person A will never resemble those of person B. The skills that you can level up and the classes themselves are so numerous that they may seem overwhelming to beginners. Here, it would be good to mention that Etrian Odyssey games have always been very difficult. However, IV has an easy mode unlike its predecessors on the DS, making it ideal for those who are not familiar with this series.
Honestly, I have no complaints, which is why I gave it 5 stars. It is a flawless game that is definitely not for everyone, but for those of us who love dungeon crawlers, it is a treasure. The game also has a demo on the 3DS eShop, completely free.
