Description

The monstera is an evergreen lush plant with large glossy and leathery leaves that have characteristic splits and is an excellent choice for an indoor plant for our home and office, as it survives even with little light.

Originating from Mexico, the monstera has slow growth and gives us a few leaves each year. The heart-shaped leaves of the monstera can exceed half a meter in length and gradually the plant can reach a height of 2-3 meters.

What position do we choose for the monstera inside the house?

The monstera withstands the shadier, but also the brighter spots of our house. In bright spots, it shows relatively faster growth. We avoid placing the pot in a spot that receives direct sunlight, as it will cause burns on its leaves. The monstera thrives in a temperature range of 18-27°C throughout the year and needs to be in a relatively humid environment to have a vibrant green color in the leaf. We make sure to protect the monstera and place it away from hot and cold drafts, from air conditioners, radiators, and fireplaces. The monstera needs fertile soil rich in nutrients, so we supply special potting soil for indoor plants.

What watering, fertilization, and other care does the monstera need?

The monstera has moderate water needs and requires watering once a week. If we water it more often, its roots and stems may rot and be destroyed. Since the monstera is demanding in terms of fertilization, we add liquid fertilizer for green plants every 2 weeks in the summer for faster growth, as well as to maintain vibrant colors in the foliage. The monstera loves humidity and it is good to mist its foliage with distilled water at least twice a week to avoid dryness or yellowing at the edges of the foliage.

How does the monstera propagate?

The propagation of the monstera is done with cuttings of 15-20 centimeters in length that come from the stems at the base of the plant. We can place the monstera cuttings in water and when they root, transplant them into pots from which the new plants will emerge.
