The ultimate and undoubtedly the most difficult challenge for every football player is to know where to be positioned on the field at every moment of the game (attack, defense, transitions), regardless of their initial position in the team's system-formation.
Therefore, the fundamental question that every player must ask themselves on the field is about positioning and not the usual "how can I score" or "how can I prevent the opponent from scoring".
Positioning gives us something much more fundamental: "how can I add value to my team's game and where should I be in every phase of the game in order to achieve it?". Football is a chaotic game and every moment of every match is different and unique. In a game that evolves in a constantly changing environment, the player is constantly called upon to interpret what is happening around them in order to calculate their next move. The more consistent and accurate the player is in answering this question, the more important they become as a member of the team's collective effort in the pursuit of high performance and victory. Therefore, positioning is a problem that must be constantly addressed.
In Part A of the book, the basic aspects of the Positional Play Model are presented in a simplified manner. This first section refers to the historical elements of Positional Play, the definition-concept-philosophy, the importance of ball possession as a tool for dominant football, and the important parameters of the model such as creating numerical superiority, positioning, creating-managing space and time, searching for the free (open) player, and the scenario of the third player. The section concludes with building the attack from the back and the concept of La Volpe's exit.
In Part B, the three basic mechanisms that make up the training-guidance methodology of Positional Play are presented, which are Rondos, Positional Games (PG), and simulations of selected tactical situations (SSP). The fundamental principles of basic Rondos are analyzed in detail and how they are guided in training. This is followed by the presentation of Positional Games as a concept and how they are applied, and then a detailed analysis of the basic Positional games 3v3 2, 4v4 3, and 7v7 3. The section concludes with a step-by-step analysis of the Simulation of Selected Tactical Situations as the third basic mechanism of this methodology.
In Part C, 85 indicative rondos games, positional games, and simulations of selected tactical situations are presented, which are analyzed with detailed reference to their basic parameters (description, game setup, objective-goal, dimensions, constraints).
