Description

The study of the relations between King Otto and Great Britain on the one hand provides valuable information about the monarchy of that period and on the other hand sheds light on the geopolitical environment of the time (Pax Britannica), the national interests and foreign policy of both the British Empire and the Greek kingdom, as well as those of other international actors, as well as the internal political environment. To this end, this investigation - through the corresponding dive into the press of the time and the Foreign Office - takes as its starting point the second Eastern Crisis (1839-1841), where the position of Great Britain is established regarding the status quo of the region, a fact that Otto, for a number of reasons, fails to perceive and adapt to the foreign policy of his kingdom. The upbringing of the king and other psychological factors shaped a personality that could not handle a paradoxical and at the same time explosive mission: to lead a newly established economically struggling kingdom that did not know what the Industrial Revolution was, suffocating within its narrow borders and due to the control of the Great Powers, to lead a people who sought their national integration and a political personnel, both foreign and native, who had engaged in a ruthless competition for higher positions and power. The analysis led to the identification of the pieces that form the puzzle in the relations between Otto and Great Britain, which Otto himself, faithfully, had called a "sad comedy". A sad comedy to which the researcher is called to determine the pomp and the recipients of both sadness and comedy.
