Description

The Meno is a dialogue that holds a key position within Plato's body of work. It is on the border of the transition from the early, purely "Socratic" phase of the author to his middle, more "mature" period, during which he appears to abandon the limitations of purely dialectical methodology, which Socrates applied in his discussions, and opens up to the formulation of his own original and revolutionary theories, which are now considered to constitute the core of what is widely recognized as Platonic philosophy. Theories such as the "separatist" idea of ideal forms or the immortality of the individual soul, as well as the function of both virtue and correct political action with a specific form of knowledge, without being fully formed yet, appear in this dialogue to be in a phase of crystallization and recognition of their mutual interconnectedness in a comprehensive and entirely innovative theoretical framework for its time. Thus, we are given the opportunity to follow the course that led a great philosopher like Plato from persistent, but mostly perplexing and seemingly dead-end exploration and criticism of opinions circulating among his contemporaries, to the radical and thorough restructuring of perceptions about the world and human society prevailing in his time, resulting in the re-foundation and re-evaluation of the entire value system on which human life is based.
