The core of this book is the collection of jars and jar lids by Angelos Vlastaris. However, the book also includes significant ceramics from other collections, as well as rich archival material. Its purpose is not only the study of ceramics, but also aims to present a tangible aspect of the great cultural and social flourishing of Chios before the massacre of 1822.

These ceramics are more recent, but they trace back to the medieval past. Their rough construction, shapes, and decoration are reminiscent of Byzantine jars and indicate a continuous tradition of vessel-making. Their technological and morphological characteristics testify to a standardized technological chain and a specific way of learning the art.

What is particularly striking, however, is the abundance of inscriptions, dates, Christian symbols, and decorative motifs on them. These ceramics reflect the overall extroversion, cultural, and religious freedom of that period. They vividly depict their era and, as they are closely associated with it, disappear with its end in 1822.
