Euripides considered love to be the most overwhelming passion and he was the first playwright to bring erotic tragedies to the theater. In these tragedies, he presents men and women experiencing passionate love or speaking about it. With their words, he vividly depicts the feeling of love. He also narrates tragic events that cause these passionate feelings, such as mania, jealousy, revengefulness, suicidal desire, and more. However, the poet does not only describe the negative aspect of love. He also refers to the love of measure and wisdom, which brings joy and happiness.
