One could examine anxiety for a long time without thinking at all about nervousness. You will understand me immediately when I speak of this form of anxiety as objective anxiety in contrast to neurotic anxiety. Real anxiety or fear, therefore, appears to us as a very natural and logical thing. We should call it a reaction to the perception of an external danger, an expected and anticipated threat. It is connected with the reflex of flight and can be considered an expression of the instinct of self-preservation. The opportunities for this, that is, the objects and situations for which one feels anxiety, will obviously depend to a large extent on the knowledge and sense of power that this individual has regarding the external world.
