There is a certain dark satisfaction in self-destruction of an individual or a nation, believing that there are no other means to prove that they are masters of their own destiny. This was told to us by philosophers and psychologists, and it has also been frequently shown by the Greeks. However, there are also counterweights to the tendency of self-destruction. Some historical figures are presented (leaders of the '21, national benefactors, politicians, fighters of the National Resistance) who, despite their bitterness and contradictions, managed to become Givers for their country. How did this self-transcendence happen? What passion awakened and deceived or even interrupted, for a while at least, that other ancient passion of plunder?
