Description

A glimpse into Greek history is enough to highlight the frequency of unorthodox wars and their pivotal role in the country's development. If we focus on the 20th century, we can distinguish the guerrilla warfare in Macedonia at the beginning of the century, the Resistance and the civil conflicts of the 1940s, as well as the liberation struggle of the Cypriots in the following decade.

Although much ink has been spilled for these three wars, it is true that we know more about their international dimension or their high politics than about their internal dynamics, their sociological dimension, or their military logic. It is clear that we are referring to different events, which unfold within a completely different historical framework. However, their significant individual differences do not negate the usefulness of the comparative approach to these three wars, something that has not been attempted until now. The articles collected in this volume raise many complex questions related to (1) the choice of unorthodox war and the interpretation of its frequency, (2) the civil dimension that accompanies it, (3) the dynamics of violence that develop within it, (4) the collective identities that fuel it and emerge from it, (5) its consequences and impacts, and (6) the symbolic capital it produces.
