My first experiential approach to music was through the art of chanting. Studying Byzantine music, I learned firsthand the practical requirements for the correct performance of melodic lines, which often include subtle intervallic nuances. When I later began studying European music, my experience in the field of Byzantine Music was particularly helpful. From both musical realms, I tried, from a very early stage, to collect and systematize all the information as best as I could, both for my own development and for the support of my students. I have gathered this experience and knowledge in the book you have in your hands.
The "Handbook of Acoustic Skills Development" is a comprehensive method that covers the entire spectrum of music education, from the simplest interval relationships to contemporary techniques. The material is divided into two parts: the first deals with topics related to tonal and modal music, and the second introduces elements from free atonal music and the twelve-tone system. For the more complex exercises, the student can initially practice their rhythmic recitation until they feel completely familiar with the rhythmic difficulties of each exercise.
The first part consists of the following sections:
- Recognition and pronunciation of melodic intervals
- Types of interval sequences in the tonal system (triads, tetrachords, pentachords)
- Relative solfege system
- Melodic exercises in the modal idiom
- Triadic chords, vertical and horizontal development
- Seventh chords
- Introduction to Functional Harmony
- Secondary dominants
- Neapolitan chord
- Augmented sixth chords
The second part consists of the following sections:
- Exercises in the twelve-tone and atonal idiom, with a gradual approach to all interval relationships.
- Melodic exercises with piano accompaniment that utilize material from all the individual sections. [...]
