Description

It is not easy to trace the origins of Greek skepticism. The beginnings of skepticism can already be found in pre-Socratic philosophy, the sophists, and the ancient cynics. In this book, among other things, we will try to present certain historical-philosophical and cultural events that connect Pyrrho of Elis with the birth of Hellenistic skepticism. Skepticism is formed for the first time as a relatively clear philosophical movement only in the Hellenistic period - even in the dichotomous form of Pyrrhonism and the skeptical Academy. And it is formed as such with the aim of creating, in a systematic way, philosophical arguments against the possibility of knowledge.

What will concern us here is the philosophical work and the almost "mythical" personality of the oldest and essentially first Hellenistic philosopher, Pyrrho of Elis (365 [possibly up to 360] - 275 [270] BC according to Bett). We will show above all that the historical personality of this philosopher, as well as the "more accurate" doctrines of his philosophy, are mostly hidden behind the mythical and often even fabricated interpretations of Hellenistic biographers and doxographers. This fact, which is due to the fact that Pyrrho himself did not leave any philosophical treatise, has resulted in many ancient and contemporary interpretations of early Pyrrhonism.
