The work "Police - Crime Control and Human Rights" examines the functioning of the police, law enforcement, and the police system in practice.
Specifically, this edition attempts to approach the terms and conditions under which law enforcement is regulated and organized, and to correlate these parameters with violations or the protection of human rights within the framework of police work.
The increase and especially the qualitative changes in crime have created an explosive social environment in terms of public safety and public order, in which the issue of human rights actually finds minimal resonance.
Specifically, particular issues arise from crime associated with fear of crime, pervasive street crime, the immigration issue and hate crimes, as well as the increasing frequency of conflicts between citizens and the police, extensive damage and destruction of stores, and the increasing spread of organized crime in combination with the crisis of the political system.
The effort to examine these issues refers to the approach of a series of issues addressed in this book "Police - Crime Control and Human Rights".
Specifically, the first chapter analyzes the problematic nature of human rights as it relates to criminology, and specifically, the systemic dimension of human rights violations, while the second chapter presents the institutional framework of protection (Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU) as well as the content of certain provisions of the ECHR that generally concern police action.
Policing models (community policing, problem-oriented policing, intelligence-led policing, third-party policing, hot-spot policing) are examined in the third chapter of the work, while the organization of the police and law enforcement in Greece (order police, security police, neighborhood police, traffic purposes, guard services, disciplinary control) is presented in the fourth chapter. Special reference is also made to crime prevention and suppression (police investigations, minors, court appearances, prohibition of assemblies, use of weapons, corruption, etc.).
The work is completed with the examination of the problem of human rights violations by the police, focusing on those cases that involve the exercise of violence and control by the police during public gatherings, detention in police custody, apprehension or arrest of suspects, mistreatment of Roma, with the presentation of relevant case law of the ECHR.
It is supplemented with an appendix of legislation (Code of Ethics for Police Officers, Legislative Decree on public gatherings, Treaty of the European Union, ECHR, Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, etc.), bibliography, and an alphabetical index.
