This edition was made on the occasion of the homonymous exhibition, organized by the National Bank Cultural Foundation in collaboration with the Society of Neohellenic Culture and General Education (Founder: Moraitis School) and with scientific advisor Alexis Dimaras, in the exhibition space of the Eynard Mansion (January 13 to March 14, 2010).
The exhibition and catalog focus on school books (alphabets, readers, Modern Greek Readings) written and illustrated by well-known writers and artists. The contribution of ten writers (G. Drosinis, G. Kazantzakis, Z. Papantoniou, A. Karkavitsas, I. Polemis, G. Xenopoulos, P. Nirvana, E. Urania, S. Myrivillis, Myrtiotissa) and fifteen artists (I. Platys, K. Maleas, P. Roubos, F. Dimitriadis, F. Kontoglou, A. Vottis, G. Kefallinos, G. Steris, P. Byzantios, V. Germinis, S. Vasileiou, A. Alevizos, K. Grammatopoulos, L. Montesantou, A. Asteriadis) is presented.
The selection was made from the school books of the so-called "general education" (primary and secondary), which were used within the administrative boundaries of the Greek state and their use was mandatory. In a separate section, the books "of the mountain and abundance" are presented, which were written and printed during the civil war and the post-civil war period for the education of refugee children.
School books are important written documents of their time. Their texts and images provide indications of the pedagogical and broader perceptions prevailing at the time of their composition. Moreover, these books were written and circulated during periods of linguistic struggles and educational reforms. The authors and artists who contributed to their composition willingly engaged in an adventure that does not resemble ordinary literary or artistic creation, which is freely and exclusively done for artistic purposes. The writing of school books complies with specifications, rules, undergoes corrections, or even a form of censorship. These books are a mixture of literary and pedagogical intentions (most of them are written in collaboration with educators), the doses of which vary depending on the time and the general educational condition. However, the fact that some important writers and artists dealt with the writing and illustration of school books led to particularly interesting or even unexpected literary, pedagogical, and artistic results.
