The UPS APC Back-UPS 1200VA is intended for users who want to protect their electronic devices from power outages and want to keep their device operational during the outage. It is aimed at small businesses and individual users who need reliable protection for their professional or personal devices, such as computers, networks, servers, monitors, televisions, speakers, and other electronic items. It has enough capacity to provide protection for home networks, connecting directly to a socket.
The APC™ Back-UPS™ BX series is an economical power protection system for home environments and home offices.
The series includes a comprehensive range of VA with top features, further enabling the capabilities of individual UPS units.
It features 4 Schuko type sockets as well as an input and output for an ethernet cable, protecting the devices connected to it, e.g. router (provided their power supply is also connected to a UPS or a surge protector). Its operation is (VI) Line-Interactive, which continuously adjusts the output voltage through an automatic voltage regulator, protecting against voltage fluctuations and power outages. Its battery can last 5 minutes at half load or 1 minute at full load (when the connected devices draw half or the maximum current that the UPS can provide, respectively).

This particular APC UPS belongs to the budget Back-UPS series, although its price is quite steep, partly due to its name. It has a good AVR that I would like to offer a smaller output voltage range, however (186.32V - 260.97V). However, this does not happen because at the same time the AVR is able to handle a very wide range of voltages (135.4V - 300V) without the need for battery intervention.
I would also like a true sine wave output and not a modified one. An indicator screen would also be welcome, as well as a detachable power cord.
On the positive side, the Powerchute software is very good, which even in the unpaid version offers several features and is very user-friendly. Additionally, the UPS holds up well under load, without any issues. The offered Shuko outputs are also sufficient, and the circuit breaker is a good protection feature. The same goes for the battery connector, through which you can disconnect them if you want to perform maintenance on the UPS or simply put it out of operation for a period of time.
Internally, the build quality is good and it has, as expected from an APC machine, input and output filters. I would like larger heatsinks for the inverter and battery charger instead of using the main transformer, which increases standby and idle power consumption.
The cables inside are close and reinforced, so there will be no problem there. However, the fan is not ball-bearing, but of low quality. On the other hand, it will not operate frequently, so there will be no problem there. Finally, the FETs and capacitors of the inverter are good, but I would like better capacitors in other areas of the board.
The battery replacement process is not so easy as you have to disassemble the entire UPS, since the front screen does not come off easily. According to APC, the batteries will last 3-5 years, for a fairly long period of time.
Overall, it is a good product, but at this price, even slightly higher, I would like at least the following: a screen, a detachable power cord, and a separate battery charger. On the other hand, you know what you're getting with APC, since the UPS has input-output protection, something that most cheap UPSs do not have, so they do not actually offer protection. Additionally, it can handle the load mentioned in the specifications by APC, and the network protection as well as the board with the USB port have good protection and high build quality. Finally, the Powerchute control program is particularly user-friendly, stable, and most importantly, free. It would be great if there was a compatible version for Mac OS.

I bought 2 of these 14 months ago.
One of them is connected to a desktop computer and 3 monitors. It lasted for a while during 3-4 power outages and I was very satisfied.
The other one is connected to a NAS and the router. It also lasted fine when needed.
However, yesterday during a power outage, one of them simply shut down completely. When the power came back, the green indicator started blinking, indicating that the battery was damaged. It doesn't pass the self tests and it says that I need to replace the batteries.
It failed us VERY EARLY and now I feel very insecure with it and with the company.
I bought another one from a different company (and more expensive). It's a shame because I'm spending more money and going through the trouble of setting everything up again.
Stay away from APC!
Purchased on 4/1/22, it crashed on 08/23.
It was under warranty so APC (Schneider) replaced it with a new one.
The new UPS did not last long, it crashed on 07/24 and there is no possibility of replacement because I am out of warranty (WARNING: the warranty for the new one they sent me counts from the purchase date of the first one, not from the replacement date)
Does what its meant for. Smells of plastic for a very long time. After months its plastic smell is still present
I bought the product and on the first day it gave me an error, something like "there is an error and you need to contact the manufacturer immediately". After about 2 weeks, it gave me the same message. I took a screenshot of the message, sent it to the Greek representative, and a replacement product arrived in a few days. The faulty one was picked up by a courier from home at no extra charge. Excellent customer-centric policy.
From 11/1/22 to 14/3/24, it worked without any issues. I replaced the batteries (2 x 9AH-12V) myself at a cost of 2*18€ and it started functioning again without any problems. I never checked it, but during a power outage, it barely held up. The battery replacement process is very easy, you only need a screwdriver (PH2 over 15 cm) and double-sided tape to attach the two batteries together. It is definitely worth the cost and time to replace the batteries every 2 years in order to protect a good computer and 2-3 peripheral devices.
-It has a smell at the beginning, I left it for 2 days in the shade on the balcony without a load.
-I have seen other users with damaged batteries, with holes, etc. The location where the machine is placed probably plays a role, but I have it in an office that is heated during working days and hours at moderate temperatures (19-21 degrees), and all parts were like new, including the batteries.
I have connected a PS5 and the TV. It has not been tested yet in a power outage. However, during frequent voltage drops (due to the area), the devices continued to work normally. It is quiet. In the first days of operation, the plastic smelled a little strong.
It came to me as a replacement for the 1200 that I gave to the company for a refund, as it had a strong smell for a long time causing me headaches. Unfortunately, this one also smells incredibly bad, so I stopped using it.
14 months later...
I have 8 pieces for work. I bought the large ones to support each one of two terminals with their screens. Not printers. Not devices with thermal loads.
One year later, the first one cleaned up.
It's not the device's fault, but the low-quality batteries it contains.
I didn't replace them with genuine APC ones, but with reputable aftermarket 12v 9ah ones.
The device continues to work normally.
I want to emphasize that no device will keep the batteries alive if they reach the end of their life.
Conclusion: Whichever UPS you choose, be prepared for the logical and expected wear and replacement of the batteries.
From 8 months to 2 years is the period you should consider.
It was purchased 10 months ago.
At first, because it had a smell, I left it outside the room in the hallway without charging it, just turned on for two weeks until the materials settled and the smell disappeared.
Later on, because the light it emitted from the front bothered me at night, I cut and stuck a piece of black insulation tape on the illuminated sides.
So far, it's been working great
Guys, after a year of using the ups 700va 360watt, while it was supporting my machine even under full load, it suddenly failed. And from what I see, no one has opened an APC ups to comment on the following... Could APC use better batteries for the ups they sell? No... They use a 12v 9ah battery from the brand Leoch... And now I ask, when the battery needs replacement, should I buy a genuine APC battery for 40 euros? And why didn't they include it from the beginning? So, are we getting a BMW with an engine from Zastava? APC used to be good, but not anymore, I'm very sorry!!!
It suddenly broke in less than 10 months of use. APC replaced it with a larger model for free. Both of them heat up excessively for a UPS, which destroys the batteries too quickly. If you plan to buy it, add a fan or a laptop stand on the side so that it lasts longer... because the little fan it has doesn't work unless it's ready to melt, obviously... I have done this now with the new one they sent, and I will follow up with an update on how long the battery lasts now that it cools better.
I read the reviews and I notice a great ignorance of the subject or evaluation based on criteria that concern other categories. In order to help, I will repost my review for the previous BX series, which applies exactly the same, slightly adjusted to the questions I saw for the new model.

This UPS has a factor of 0.55, like all UPS in this category, with a maximum of 0.6 for some brands. This means that its maximum load is 660 watts. So, if someone overloads it for 3 years and claims that it no longer holds, they should have lit a candle in the church that kept it and not thrown it away from the beginning (this also applies to those who say that the UPS failed without telling us the actual loads they had on it - a computer alone can range from 300 to 1500W, not VA). This UPS is a reputable UPS for basic protection of a computer or a few peripherals. It is not suitable for gaming or power supplies of 850 watts and peripherals. (HERE I SHOULD MENTION THAT APC AND SCHNEIDER ARE THE SAME COMPANY - SOMEONE CLAIMS THAT THEY ARE NOT THE SAME) Also, something important about batteries: all manufacturers, whether Chinese or super branded, consider a lifespan of 2 years acceptable. The battery is consumable - if you are in an area with good electricity and have good charging and discharging, it can last for 5 years or even less than 2 if you abuse it or overload it (common practice). Also, the number of power outages you experience and the number of voltage dips the UPS encounters in an area with voltage problems are completely different. We operate UPS at 70% of the load so that they can last a little longer and better maintain the circuits over time. These are general points. It is a reputable non-sine wave line interactive honest UPS (here I should say that someone cannot deduct one star just because it is not a sine wave - an evaluation concerns the specific category - it's like evaluating a Fiat but deducting a star because it doesn't have Porsche software). It doesn't have anything special beyond what you pay for - simple and nice. Are there cheaper options? Of course, but with UPS, you get what you pay for. You can't compare the cheapest Chinese one with a reputable French or American manufacturer. This specific UPS is a cheap reputable one, just to have an idea. I deduct one star because its replacement batteries are more expensive than those of a b-branded UPS - and in models that are below 100-150€, the value of the battery drops to about half the price. However, this applies to all A-branded UPS regardless of the brand. I hope I helped

I have had it for about a year and I have connected it to a monitor and PC. I waited a while before writing this review to see how it performs and yes, it does exactly what it says. It has saved me from many power outages and fluctuations. The fact that it is not a pure sine wave has not caused any problems with my computer, although I would prefer a UPS with a pure sine wave. The application has everything you need to know, although the UI is a bit outdated. I would give it 4 stars because it is not a pure sine wave, but I knew what I was getting and it still pleasantly surprised me.
I have bought 2 and after 18 months one and 12 months the other, their batteries broke randomly in both of them ;;;; Stay awayyyyy

A) In 4 months, it broke! (They replaced it for me..)
B) (The new one I received) in 1 year and 4 months, it needs batteries!!!!
I contacted the company and they told me:
1) The cost of the batteries is around 150€ (75€ + 75€ for 2 x 12v at 7Ah), and that it is not cost-effective for me to replace them....
2) Finally, they told me that the damage may be due to a damaged circuit board and not the batteries!!!!!
3) So they suggested that I buy a new one!!!
That means I have to spend 220 EUROS every 1.5 years for a UPS..
C) Finally, I opened it to replace them myself with 2 x 12v at 9Ah with a cost of 35€ FOR BOTH!!!
Of course, what I saw was a shocking scar.. One of the 2 batteries looked like it was patched up. 2 HOLES (one on each side) about 2cm!! It had melted from the heat and had become one with the plastic chassis!! I contacted the official support and they told me that this model has many problems! With great difficulty, I removed the old ones and connected the 2 new ones.. So far, it works fine.
Finally, they told me that this UPS is one of the cheap models with corresponding materials..
I haven't had it for a long time, but when it was needed, it lasted for hours and worked well in fluctuations of the voltage. As a construction, it doesn't seem very high-quality.
I have it for 3 months. Yesterday, with the bad weather, the first serious test was done. Flawless and silent. The lights were flickering and when they finally went out, it lasted 5 minutes that I needed to turn off the computer and TV, simultaneously with the modem, telephone, and Nova. 1200VA.
I haven't had it for long. I am very satisfied. Small in size, completely silent. Maybe the green LED is annoying if you have it somewhere visible, but if you have it behind a desk, it's fine. I have 2 computers with their peripherals on top, it gives you enough battery time to shut them down properly. Good value for money.
11/01/2023: Quite a good UPS for the few devices I have connected to it. The software it comes with informs me that if the power goes out, it will last for 15 minutes until everything shuts down, and it also has protection against under/over voltages. However, the UPS has a huge flaw for me personally, not in its functionality but in coexisting in the same space with it: the smell of cheap plastic that lingers when you heat it up. I understand that they have reduced the quality of the materials to lower the cost, but this is too much. Be prepared to be overwhelmed by the plastic smell if you are in the same space with it for a week.
Edit 08/05/2024: Our initial 750VA UPS completely failed after 1.5 years of operation with a total of 3 power outages and no over/under voltages. It couldn't perform a self-test, its software reported that I needed to replace the batteries (no battery detected), and it constantly showed the charging indicator, but no matter how long I left it plugged in, it stayed at 85% charged. After contacting APC customer support and going back and forth with them about 3 times, they sent me a new UPS within 1.5 weeks, this time a 950VA one. I am currently packing up the old one to send it back to them. Let's see how the new one performs.
Very good UPS, I have had it for a year in my system and it has experienced many blackouts, undervoltages, and overvoltages (generally, my area is terrible). I have connected 2 monitors (one 27-inch and one 24-inch), a PC with an 850-watt power supply, a 5.1 speaker system at 150 watts, and other small devices. In case of a power outage, it can hold for about 15 minutes, so I have enough time to finish the work I was doing and safely shut down the PC.
EDIT 8/12/23: The UPS failed on me, but after contacting the excellent customer service, they replaced it (it was still under warranty) within a week. At the moment, the old one has been sent back to the service center via courier, and I have my new one which serves me perfectly, just like the old one.
When UPS does what it promises. It protects 1 PC 11th gen intel with RX 5700 XT all custom loop 1440p monitor with RGB and other bells and whistles + the provider's router and telephone line. The problem occurred 1 year later when the internet speed dropped from 100 mbps to about 10. After several phone calls with the provider and several tests, I bypassed the UPS from the telephone line and the speed returned to normal.
I have it here for 2 weeks, the first week it had a burnt smell for me too, but if you ventilate the room every day, you don't notice it much, only if you're away from the room for a long time and come back later. After 7-8 days, it doesn't smell anything anymore. It doesn't make any noise, just the only thing I didn't like, although I think it's logical, is that when you connect the battery connector, it makes a snap, which scares you to some extent, and also the connector doesn't tell you how far it should go in and it sticks out a little as a protrusion. I had to call APC and after sending them a photo, they told me it's connected correctly. (However, APC should look into the issue with the snap and then the smell, as it will make many people return it thinking it's burnt).
About 3 months later, I'm thinking of returning it and getting another model because of the smell, which is quite strong if you play in a closed room.
In the end, I returned it and will get another model. If you want it for use in a room with a closed door for many hours, I would suggest looking for something else.
APC... to have your mind at ease. I have put it in a rack, it holds a modem/router, PoE+ Switch, and wifi controller
UPDATE: Guys, within 3 months it gave up! It had only one Synology and one TP LINK router on it, and one day it started screaming like possessed. I tried everything, reset, stories, nothing. Next to it I have the same one, and luckily it keeps the PC running (the PC doesn't exceed 200-250W, I have a wattmeter). I bought it with a Scroutz basket and luckily they will come to pick up its rotten body and (hopefully) send another one to see what it will do...

Negatives:
1. Smell for 2-3 weeks from the purchase. Put it near a ventilated window, you will hear it.
2. Weird voltage surge. It has a PC and a monitor on it. If the load suddenly increases, it may turn off instantly. I don't know why with 100% battery it doesn't at least go into passthrough.

My primary goal was to connect the router, an rpi4 with home assistant, and the alarm for 24/7 use, and the fixed screen only when needed to keep my mind at ease. Through NUT integration, it worked perfectly on ha and provides me with enough information that is accessible both locally and remotely, so I always have updates on the status and smooth operation, as well as power supply of the systems on it. The permanent green light it has is a bit annoying, but for now, I have covered it with tape and it no longer bothers me at night.
I bought it for my networking equipment (router/switch, etc.). I have had it for a few months now and so far I am very satisfied.
The best part is that I recently connected it to my Synology's USB and it recognized it with the default configuration just like that! For a desktop, I would say it is small, but for multiple devices with low power consumption, it is ideal.
Update
After two years and one month of use, the battery died. Suddenly, it started making a continuous sound and after searching on the APC website, I found out that the battery needs to be replaced. I am disappointed because I would have expected it to have some more life left, as I don't have frequent power outages, nor do I have heavy loads to cause deep discharge. Maybe I was unlucky and had an old battery inside. I will try to replace it and update the review when I see the lifespan of the new one.
I have it in the warehouse for the main router (switch, NAS Hd) and so far everything is fine. The brand is guaranteed and doesn't need recommendations. It's a bit bulky, but it doesn't affect anything else.
A few days ago, after thorough research and reading the detailed review from Hardware Busters below, I made a purchase. I don't have much to add. It is indeed true that "you get what you pay for" in these cases, especially after the near disaster I had with my previous budget UPS. I realized it completely now. The only thing I would like it to have for its price is a screen for basic measurements. Other than that, it is very well-made. It has a sturdy construction of medium to large dimensions, but with a very nice design that blends the UPS with the space without causing nausea if you're a minimalist. And of course, it has a very long autonomy. It kept my PC and monitor running for over 20 minutes without any worries. I will come back at some point to talk about the batteries, as I still can't form an opinion since they are brand new. The difference between APC and other companies is truly evident.

A year later and the UPS is still flawless. Always there during power outages, fluctuations, and any kind of problem related to electricity. The battery life has not deteriorated at all. If it wasn't for the high price, I would give it 5 stars without hesitation. APC is a reliable brand and guarantee.

Unfortunately, the batteries needed to be replaced. I don't know if I was just unlucky and got faulty ones, as APC provides a 5-year lifespan for its batteries. After replacing the batteries, the UPS continues to work perfectly just like in the beginning. It should also be noted that the batteries, as I discovered upon opening the UPS, were not from APC but from a different brand.
Hit the wood has not been used for the intended purpose. However, the smell of plastic took 2 weeks to go away
When the light went out, the brightness of the television started to decrease, and we immediately turned it off, so I don't know what capabilities it has for a 55-inch television
