This book deals with the issue of racism in philosophy. It refers to the racism that is often encountered in the writings of some of the most prominent figures in the history of Western philosophy, specifically Locke, Kant, and Hegel. The latter seem to express racist views that, in our eyes but obviously not in theirs, seem to contradict the very moral principles they proclaim. However, the book does not focus so much on their racism, but on the ways in which we confront or, more often, avoid confronting it ourselves. Does contemporary philosophy perhaps harbor an inherent institutional racism, which emerges in our tendency to ignore or downplay their racism while simultaneously praising their principles?
