Quite better than the previous versions, the 5th in a row. Better descriptions and explanation of the game for new players

Very good edition. The 5th edition of DnD is ideal for new players and quite good for experienced ones who are tired of Pathfinder or DnD 3.5 (or playing with new players, like in my case). Fast battles, easy character creation (although with limited options, obviously), good balancing. Wizards don't run out of spells at levels 1-5, nor do fighters feel useless when the wizard/sorcerer gets the fireball.

The Player's Handbook is enough for most parties, the rules are explained quickly and simply and no additional books are needed, and in combination with the Monster Manual, you can start playing. The Dungeon Master's Guide is recommended for those who are seriously interested in DMing, but it is not necessary. Campaign Settings can cover the need for creating a whole world, which is definitely something scary for a new DM.

I strongly recommend a test play with a PDF before purchasing the book. Play 2-3 sessions, see if you like the 5th edition, and then buy the PHB and the MM to be more comfortable around the table without mobiles or tablets. It is not difficult to find the PDFs (once you put on your pirate hat), and while the money is reasonable for the edition (color pages, hardcover, large page size, almost two-page illustrations, etc.), you need to confirm that it is worth the investment. Also, the hobby has opened up a lot in recent years, and you will easily find answers to rules questions (which will definitely arise around the table) or suggestions for traps, dungeons, encounters, etc., in the form of videos, texts, books, and even websites for quick construction of dungeons/campaign settings/encounters/NPCs/whatever else you can think of.
