Description

The adventurous life of a leading Greek politician and intellectual, who experiences the turbulent course of Greece in the 20th century, with revealing snapshots and unknown behind-the-scenes. Following the protagonist, the reader will start from the Belle Époque Patras, travel to the Heidelberg of philosophers and poets, and return with the young sociologist to interwar Greece, of fierce ideological conflicts and the dictatorship of August 4th. They will accompany Kanellopoulos to the front of the Greco-Italian war and secretly escape with him to the Middle East, where he formed the Sacred Band. They will join the protagonist in his dramatic solitary journey through the Civil War, which posed urgent dilemmas to consciences. The political career of Kanellopoulos follows, as a leading figure of the Right, alongside Papagos and Karamanlis, while the undermining of democracy in the 1960s is described in revealing detail. The book concludes with the arrest of the protagonist as prime minister on April 21, 1967. An epilogue follows, along with the only self-criticism by a Greek politician about the events of the post-war era. The book is based on years of research in Greek and foreign archives, and is complemented by rare, unpublished photographs.
