Description
The search for new sources in the work of Rigas Velestinlis yields significant findings:
- The source of the famous two verses from the Thourios is revealed, "It is better to have one hour of free life,/than forty years of slavery and prison."
- New translations of works by French encyclopedists are approached.
- An important German source of English origin is identified.
- Rigas' familiarity with Voltaire's work and the translation of large excerpts from his texts are certified.
- The answer to how Rigas encountered "Haler's aphorism" that sealed his work ("Whoever thinks freely, thinks well") is given.
- New thoughts are formulated about Rigas' secret organization and his personal relationship with religion.
Through these new findings, an attempt is made to interpret the intolerance of official conservative historiography towards the personality, actions, and work of Rigas. Specifically, the negative attitude of representatives of the Greek Orthodox Hierarchy, from Patriarch Gregory V to Archbishop Christodoulos and the current Governing Church, is analyzed.
Most importantly, however, Rigas' political plan for a constitutional establishment of liberated Greece and the Balkans based on the most advanced principles of radical Enlightenment is summarized. Rigas' liberating vision includes equal treatment of all population groups, without any distinction of gender, national origin, religion, or language. This revolutionary plan, which was, of course, buried under the dominance of 19th-century nationalisms, remains extremely relevant. And, for many, absolutely unthinkable.
