The history of the Greeks travels through time on the ship called the Greek language. Seamanship and language have timelessly shaped the characteristics of this restless people whose traces are found deep in the past, about 4,000 years ago.

The Greeks played a pivotal role in antiquity in the eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Their language became a tool for learning and communication for many peoples of the wider region, as well as, later, for the emerging Christianity. With their culture, they "conquered" the Eastern Roman Empire, transforming it into the Byzantine Empire, and remained intellectually vigilant during the Ottoman rule. With their revolution in 1821, they established the first national independent state of the eastern Mediterranean, connected with the western world, expanded their borders, and took their place among the peoples of modern Europe – and the world.
