Description
The most important literary legacy of the award-winning American writer John Updike is considered to be the character of "Rabbit" Angstrom in The Rabbit Series. A tetralogy that follows him at different stages of his life. From 1961 in "Rabbit, Run" to 1990 in "Rabbit at Rest". The 3rd title of the series "Rabbit Is Rich" and the 4th "Rabbit at Rest" were awarded the Pulitzer Prize. In 2010, Time magazine included "Rabbit, Run" in its list of the hundred best novels of the past century.
In the first novel of the tetralogy, one can discern the fabricated happiness, the thirst for life, the unfathomable existential impasse. But also the indomitable tendencies of escape of the archetypal "average American" of the 1950s.
Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom, a basketball star in his high school years, is 26 years old and married to Janice. They are expecting their second child. He makes a living by demonstrating a "miraculous" peeler for the kitchen. Another one of the dozens of new household appliances that flooded the market of optimistic post-war America. Until suddenly Rabbit discovers that all he wants is to leave. He wants to leave behind his life in the suburb of his small town in Pennsylvania. And along with it, the entire predetermined future that awaits him. But how far can he really go?
