Description

"Aphrodite" refers to the abyssal relationship of three people: a mother who has unhealthy relationships with her two sons. One is disabled and tends to fall in front of cars and ask for compensation from the drivers. The other traffics drugs but detests users. "These are for the wretched," he says, "for people with diminished intelligence and no imagination"...

"The fiction is based on the absence of love and the frenzied possessiveness of three individuals," says the author about his book. "On the back cover of 'Aphrodite,' I wrote something by Kafka. That the book should act like an axe that breaks the ice of the psychic space."

Kostas Stamatiou wrote in the newspaper "Ta Nea" on April 4, 1987, when "Aphrodite" was first released: "A playwright, translator of works by the leading creators of classical and avant-garde theater, Pavlos Matesis [...], emerges in the forefront of our contemporary prose. This relatively short text [...] is one of the most thrilling 'thrillers' I have ever read. Of course, the internal tension, the economy of language, the dramatic climaxes bring to mind similar atmospheres that one finds in Pinter (perpetually), in Albee ("The Zoo Story"), in Sartre ("No Exit"). What does it matter? Matesis has fruitfully assimilated the best elements of a brilliant theater and produces his own - and clearly Greek - prose. His 'Aphrodite' is a reproduction of 'living life,' an unyielding text and, at times, truly stunning."
