Description

A documentary book: real people telling their stories and bringing a country and an era to life. These people were the first in their family to graduate, to wear the "golden bracelet," and to change their lives.

The family aspiration that shaped an entire country. A degree for the child.
Sophia Nikolaidou interviews and presents to us in their own words those who left the village and came to the city. Those who were born into poverty by parents who knew little or nothing about letters.

Those who studied, went to university, acquired respectable professions, and comfortable lives. Farm children who became doctors, working-class children who studied law. Girls who fought for the obvious: a job and their own wallet. Free entrepreneurs and civil servants, graduates of public schools or scholarship recipients of the big private ones. Children who studied in Greece or abroad.

In 20th-century Greece, we experienced a peaceful revolution: a revolution armed with education and literacy.

A panorama of the 20th and 21st centuries in a country that has changed and continues to change. Three generations of Greeks tell their story and create a mosaic of voices - like the old mosaics in the houses we grew up in.

A song whose chorus we know well. It is the voice that says, we may go hungry, but the child will study.
