This edition comes with several significant additions and some changes compared to the previous edition, but with the preservation of the main theoretical positions, methodical principles, and common exercises, which have been agreed upon by all the authors.
The changes we made in the text of this edition concern the content and size of separate chapters, the explanation of a series of positions and definitions, the further popularization of all practical exercises, even the selection of examples from music literature for harmonic analysis, etc.
In order to strengthen the desired practice of the entire manual, we considered it necessary and appropriate to mainly increase the quantity of exercises in all types of harmonic tasks, namely harmonization, development, harmonic variation, analysis, selection of excerpts, and piano practice. When we re-studied and changed the musical examples, we managed to increase their quantity through Russian classical music and compositions by our contemporary composers.
In this edition, the practically difficult and complex chapter referring to the diatonic modes of Russian music has been significantly expanded and studied more methodologically - we believe that this strengthened its importance.
Essentially, the same purpose - strengthening the practical role of the manual in the pedagogical process - is served by the new chapters and additions that exist in the content of this edition.
For the first time in this manual, a chapter is introduced, which dedicates certain important issues of harmonic analysis and presents methods and exercises for it. The absence of such an important chapter in previous editions undoubtedly created a gap.
In a special supplement (also for the first time), specially formulated harmonization exercises are given, which are more free in style and present a wider range of melodies, to test the student's ability to successfully use all the harmonic means they have learned on their own.
In accordance with the tradition and methodical goals of the previous edition, in this edition, the examples of harmonization (which have partly multiplied) have been written without functional explanations. This was done so that the students can understand the complexity of harmonic means and rules on their own, which they will use to solve the exercises. In this edition, as in the previous ones, the melodies and the bases for harmonization are partly borrowed from other manuals. [...]
