Description

What are the underlying causes of the last military dictatorship in Greece? What were the characteristics and social origins of the officers who overthrew the Democracy and the established order on the stormy night of April 21, 1967? What ideological influences were hidden behind their actions and what were their true and unspoken motivations? Was their regime a rupture with the old party establishment or a continuation in a different form? Who were the "Nasserists," who were called "Kantaphists," and what exactly did their populism mean? Was April 21st a fascist regime or not? What was the attitude of the Greek people towards the Dictatorship? What was the real relationship between the military junta and the royal dynasty, which it ultimately overthrew? What are the similarities and differences between April 21st and August 4th of General Metaxas? How right-wing was April 21st? Are there common points with Andreas Papandreou's PASOK? Is the view that the Dictatorship achieved brilliant results in the economic sector justified?

After a decade of research, collecting unpublished material and unknown facts, interviews with dozens of protagonists of the era, and utilizing personal archives, using statistical tables and reports from the OECD, Melétis Meletópoulos has composed a fascinating text that constitutes the first substantial scientific work on the dictatorship of April 21st. The author attempted to unravel the mythology surrounding a regime that suppressed the freedoms of the Greek people and sealed its downfall with the Cyprus tragedy.

The first part of the book examines the social origins and personalities of the protagonists, collaborators, and supporters, as well as the identity of the people who resisted the Dictatorship without hesitation. The second part analyzes the various ideological currents, as well as the personalities, work, and thoughts of the people who influenced or attempted to influence the developments and give ideological content to the deviation. The third part presents the economic developments of this period, the economic and social policies of the Dictatorship, its five-year program, and its relationship with capital, the working class, and the agricultural class. The complete chronology of events, from the rise to the fall of the Colonels, is also provided in the book. Finally, 40 unpublished photographs from the era are included.
