Description
The Interwar period, that is the period 1922-1940, is the most important period in modern Greek history. It was during this time that the foundations were laid for the reality as we experience it today.
This book presents elements of the social history of the Greeks that certainly do not only concern Macedonia. The formation of political networks, their strategies for garnering votes, the expression and management of the myriad demands of voters and peasants, the conflicts between locals and refugees regarding land, the intense political passions of the divided Greeks between Venizelists and anti-Venizelists are some of the elements analyzed in this study, which characterize the entire rural Greece of the Interwar period.
The focus of the study is on two groups who were both "foreigners": the refugees who came to a new homeland very different from the one they left, and the Slavic-speaking population who were also in some way "foreign". The main question that runs through this book is the role of the state in the effort to integrate the Slavic-speaking population and the refugees into Greek society, and how the parliamentary system influenced the formation of national and political identities in Interwar Macedonia.
