The collection of observations that the reader has in his hands was first published in 1977 in German, under the title "Vermischte Bemerkungen" ("Miscellaneous Remarks"), by the publishing houses Blackwell-Oxford and Suhrkamp-Frankfurt am Main, who collaborated on the publication of Wittgenstein's texts. Within a year (in 1978), a second expanded edition was released with the same title and the addition of some more remarks taken from notebooks from 1944 and 1948. In 1980, a bilingual edition was published by Blackwell, containing the expanded original text along with an English translation by Peter Winch, under the more commercial title "Culture and Value." This edition was reprinted in 1984. In all of the above cases, the editor responsible for the publication was Georg Henrik von Wright, whose introductory note we include in our own translation.

As the original, we naturally used the text of the expanded edition from 1978/1980. Professor Myrto Dragona-Monachou and I initially worked independently, so as not to influence each other, translating from the original German and simultaneously aided by Peter Winch's official English translation.
