Description

What is a religion without a single God, without a Church, without clergy, without doctrine and "belief", without the promise of immortality? To outline the image of the official religion of the ancient Greeks means that, in attempting to answer this question, one ponders on the nature of faith in this type of transaction with the divine, on the relationship of the faithful with their gods, on the strictly defined position that the individual holds in the entire organization of the sacred.

The religious element, as it is involved in the institutions of the city, consistently appears oriented towards earthly life: its goal is to guarantee citizens a purely human existence in this world and not to secure their salvation in the other world.

What religion leaves outside its realm, and what is marginally and heretically dealt with by movements, will be appropriated by philosophy: the development of the concept of the transcendent, contemplation on the nature and destiny of the soul, the search for a union of man with God through the purification of the soul from everything that is foreign to the divine.
