The monograph titled "Religious Tourism" was first published in 2009. The opinions expressed in this work were influenced by the reflections of priests, monks, and laypeople within the framework of the program titled "Management of Cultural Heritage," implemented by the Institute of Training of the National Center for Public Administration and Local Government (EKDDA/INEP) in collaboration with the Church of Greece. In this program, the author participated as a presenter in the thematic unit "Prospects for the development of religious tourism in Greece." Specifically, the seminars took place in Meteora from 30/10-3/11/2006, in Larissa from 1/10-5/10/2007, in Patras from 15/10-19/10/2007, and in Athens from 12/11-15/11/2007.
After a decade, the interest of the academic community has become strong, and religious tourism is even taught as an independent subject in many undergraduate and postgraduate study programs at universities in the country. It has also sparked significant interest from the business community in shaping and developing corresponding tourist activities.
The purpose of this monograph is to contribute to the scientific approach of religious tourism as a social phenomenon and to the effort to formulate appropriate policies for the utilization of the country's religious-cultural resources. It also seeks to clarify the distinction between religious tourism and pilgrimage, which requires a particular approach and management.
