The topic of education for Venetian citizens in the traditional Greek territory, a delicate issue and a fruitful vehicle for expressing disapproving or praising comments about the Venetians, the Western rulers in the territories of the Byzantine Empire, was a controversial issue for both the citizens themselves at the time and for later researchers.

In the 19th century, Venice was presented in the existing literature on the subject as the Sovereign that refused to establish schools in its possessions, defending its aristocratic regime and highlighting its colonial intentions, or as the Western Catholic presence and military force in the Orthodox space of the East. On the other hand, the Venetian-controlled Greek territory was contrasted with the Ottoman-controlled one, appearing as the carrier and successor of the glory of ancient Greece, a view that already appears in the writings of Venetian citizens in the 18th century.

The history of education in Venetian possessions can be better understood if we take into account the following parameters:

  • the period of time during which areas of the Greek territory came under Venetian rule,
  • the manner and time of conquest of each area,
  • the educational organization in the same period in Europe,
  • education in the city of Venice,
  • the social stratification of the population in Venetian possessions,
  • the need for teaching Greek and Italian languages,
  • the coexistence and common education of individuals belonging to two doctrines,
  • the preservation and safeguarding of documents from the Venetian period in each place.
