Mount Athos is the largest living collection of Orthodox heritage, gathered in a limited space, and one of the most important zones in the world of historical and cultural significance.

It is a place of great interest. Religious activity, cultural and archival wealth, art, and the natural environment have been and continue to be inexhaustible objects of scientific research and are studied in multiple ways. The subjects addressed in this book differ from other approaches in methodology and analytical tools, as they are treated as holistic phenomena dependent on the space with recording scales dictated by human geography. Good knowledge of the space, on-site research, and long-term monitoring played a primary role in the analysis.

The concepts of spatial articulation, economic mechanisms of operation, population geography, distribution, and evolution of the settlement body constitute the framework within which expressions of human activity in the present and the past are examined and the course of its future is estimated.
