Description

When Charles Dickens praises raisins in his Christmas Stories as an essential element of the festive table and, by extension, as one of the symbols of happiness for the urban London family, Victorian England is experiencing the era of currants. In the markets of London and Liverpool, Corinthian raisins will displace any other type of this product. With the raisin, an important region of the Greek State is integrated into a European economic framework centered on England. At the center of this world, the organizer and merchant are Patras. The city is the subject of the book.

The book consists of three parts. In the first part, we observe the space, heavily laden with functions and meanings (but also its representation or functional interpretation in texts and images of its contemporaries). In the second part, we observe the people, mainly the merchants but also the old traditional landowners. In the third part, we observe the products, the currants of the English, the raisins de Corinthe of the French. The times of the raisin also determine the times of the city.

A study based on archival sources that presents, for the first time, documented and comprehensive information about the first export center of the Greek State.
