Description

"Wine of Gustav" is not an oenological study. Although it is soaked in plenty of resin, lots of raisins, some small barrels of verdea, and many bottles of red and white wine, it is the product of research by a historian who may also be a wine lover. Its subject is a perception, the perception of "verbal winemaking," oenologie savante, from the commercial layers of the grape-growing regions (Peloponnese and Ionian Islands), and the step-by-step conquest of wine maturity, in a geographical area where Greece experienced its own "black fever," the grape fever. After all, the Peloponnese was the largest vine-growing region in the country, at least until World War II.
Verbal winemaking and the development of winemaking in commercial contexts certainly have a strong entrepreneurial aspect. However, strong cultural parameters are also present, which have to do with the transformation of the merchant into a vine grower, with his legitimization through the land, and with his symbolic installation in a space through viticulture. Also, with behaviors towards wine and alcohol, with social time and its disposition, but also with cultural differences that are founded on wine.

The title "The Wine of Gustav" is based on this relationship. After all, our hero has two faces, without being Janus. One Gustav, Klaus, laid the foundations of winemaking in Patras, that is, in the capital of a large region that, for more than a century, supported its economy on raisins, and another Gustav, Flaubert, wrote about the poor quality of the local - presumably raisin - wine, thus highlighting the cultural superiority of France.
