This printer replaced my Canon MP550 all-in-one printer that lasted almost a decade, so it had a good history with the brand.
The G6040 is the cheapest ink tank all-in-one (3-in-1) printer that has a sheet feeder tray, as the cheaper models from both Canon and Epson only have rear feed. Rear feed is problematic because you can't leave A4 sheets for a long time, as they curl and make both printing and feeding unreliable. The sheet feeder tray was the reason why this model was chosen over other similar-priced ones. The cheapest competitor with a bottom sheet feeder costs around +100€ (Epson 6160). The Canon was purchased for 240€.
Regarding its installation: I had read many stories about complicated installation, but ultimately, following the online instructions, it was very easy. It connected to WiFi easily and has been printing wirelessly without any difficulty on all the computers where the installation was done. I would recommend installing it from the Canon website (ij.start.canon). The only negative aspect of the installation was the 'mandatory' loading of a program at system startup, which I removed from the Windows startup list. Its removal does not affect the printer's operation at all, as I believe this program only makes sense if there are multiple printers on the network, so it can be freely removed.
Print quality: Very good print quality in standard mode, with good - although slightly 'faded' - graphics representation. With a little adjustment in the settings, this can be corrected, although I was satisfied with the quality in text with mixed graphics and in PDF. In photo printing, on Canon Photo Glossy Plus II paper, the results are exceptional. The photos are printed like on a very good inkjet printer, with an EXTREMELY lower cost per photo. In fact, its quality made me print old photos that I didn't even dare to print with the old inkjet. Overall, very satisfied with the print quality.
Print speed: Moderate speed, with approximately 10 color pages per minute (in standard quality). A 10x15 photo (always in the best possible print quality) takes less than a minute. Personally, it doesn't bother me, but for some, it may be an issue.
Scanner: Very good to excellent scanning quality, with the negative aspects being its speed and relatively high noise. Scanning directly to the PC via WiFi is extremely convenient, as well as the option to save as JPEG or PDF and choose the DPI.
Economy: No comments. The reason for buying this printer. It comes with the box containing 3 black inks (~18,000 pages!!!!) and a set of color inks (~6,000 pages). During installation, filling the tubes 'empties' about 10% of the inks, but this only happens during the first installation. From then on, each ink costs around 6-7 Euros, with each one printing 6,000 pages. There's no need to say anything else. Printing photos should be cheaper than getting them printed at a photo shop. After printing many pages (over 300+) and around 30 photos, the ink levels don't seem to have moved.
Overall, very satisfied, and I'm looking forward to seeing how long it will last before the time comes to clean the ink pads and if I can do it myself. Anyway, after the experience with ink tank printers, I don't think I would ever buy anything else. Highly recommended.
Update/edit: After a month of use, it started having connection problems with the wireless network. After connecting multiple devices to the network, one of them 'clashed' with the printer and caused chaos. The solution is relatively simple, but Canon does not provide instructions for it. So, I would suggest the following: Download the "IJ Network Device Setup utility" application from the Canon website and select "Printer Network Setup". Once the printer is found, choose to have a fixed IP address, 'away' from other devices, for example, if the network has the address 192.168.1.XXX (where XXX is the devices connected to your network), set the printer to position 100 or 150, i.e. 192.168.1.100, so that it does not coincide with other devices that will connect to the network. This solution has worked for all devices that have connected to the network since then, and there have been no issues with wireless printing.
As for its economy, I simply have no words. Over 700 printed pages, many photos, and the ink has barely decreased by 10-15%.
I received the printer with a presumably faulty print head. It prints horizontal lines that only appear in graphics/images. It took me 1-2 weeks to realize this. Since then, it has been sent to the service center, where it has remained for over a month without any updates. This is obviously unacceptable, despite Canon assuring me of immediate repair. Of course, there is no mention of replacement... Therefore, the support is unacceptable, and I don't believe it's worth purchasing.
Update: After one month, the printer was returned to me with the same problem, even though the print heads were replaced. The purchasing store (websupplies, excellent in every aspect, kudos to them) replaced the printer on their own initiative. However, the new printer has the same issue. Horizontal lines at a fixed distance in any shape or graphic. The lines are at the point where the print head line changes, so there is obviously a calibration problem or a flaw in the mechanism that advances the paper. Searching on the internet and relying on my knowledge, I concluded that the problem is: Banding Due To Media Advancement - Distance Banding (Step banding), Appearance: Uniform light or dark horizontal lines, Cause: Media advancing too fast or too slow, General solution: Recalculate or adjust the media advance.
After contacting Canon, which took almost 2-3 months, initially responding with suggestions for cleaning the print head and alignment, despite my explanations, they forwarded our entire communication, along with printed PDFs, JPEGs, etc. clearly showing the problem, to the technical department. I even printed the same files on old Canon MX885 and IP500 printers, as well as on much cheaper HP and EPSON printers with ink cartridges, and the printing had no issues on plain paper and basic quality.
And the response I just received: The printer, on plain paper and with standard or basic quality, prints ONLY TEXT!!!! For any simple graphic in Word, Excel, or PDF, it requires photo paper and high quality!! In other words, a printer that is NOT a photo printer, an office printer purchased for cost-saving on office documents, requires photo paper and high print quality!! So, where is the cost-saving? And obviously, this particular machine cannot even distinguish itself in photo printing...
If this is considered a serious response from a serious company after such a long period of time studying the issue, all I can say is: NEVER AGAIN Canon.
At first, it is fantastic. After 2-3 years and with minimal use, it stopped printing and gives an error for changing the print heads. Also, every time I want to print, it shows an error, and I end up doing my work after two hours of cursing. The worst printer I have ever bought.
I bought this model for 250 euros. After using it for a few days, I realize that the printer is amazing. It has a Greek menu on the screen, as well as instructions in Greek on the packaging. The prints are flawless, both black and white and color. I was especially impressed by the excellent color printing on plain A4 paper. The prints are relatively fast and the noise is low. I connected wirelessly to my computer running Windows 7 and everything works perfectly. Immediate response. Of course, it also has an Ethernet port, as well as a USB port. Also, printing from my mobile phone is very easy and fast. It comes with six inks, 3 black 170 ml each and 3 color. Essentially, the 2 additional black inks are for future use. Assuming that what the manufacturer says about 6000 black prints for each ink is true, with the purchase of the printer we have a margin for approximately 18,000 black and white prints and also for 7,700 color pages. And since the cost of inks is very cheap, the printer's cost is easily recovered. Finally, it has all the other basic features, such as double-sided printing, photocopying, and scanning. It also has a special closed cassette-holder for up to 250 A4 sheets.
Update 17/05/2024. From 5 stars to 1. Many problems after 2 years of purchase. Continuous printing jams and finally in the 3rd year it gave up. It displayed error 5B00 on the screen, which practically means that it cannot be repaired even by CANON. Stay away, you will regret your money.
Yesterday I received the Canon G6040 (purchased for €250). It will replace a Canon MG7150 due to the cost of ink cartridges.
The Canon G6040 was chosen based on having the same capabilities as the MG7150 but with cheaper ink cartridges.
I liked the following features of the MG7150 (which the G6040 also has):
1. Closed tray for A4 paper. (The experience with open rear trays has shown that you either have to insert paper before each print or keep the paper permanently, resulting in dust entering the mechanisms, eventually reaching the print heads).
2. Automatic duplex printing.
3. Scanning from the operation panel and sending to the selected computer (always from the printer's operation panel). This feature is useful when connected via Wi-Fi and the computer is not next to the printer.
In general, the G6040 performs as stated in its specifications.
The only negative aspect is its operation panel (monochrome with two lines and not illuminated), while the 5-year-old MG7150 had a color touchscreen and touch buttons.
What concerns me is whether the mechanism that lifts the operation panel from a vertical to a horizontal position will withstand the test of time.
I hope it lasts for 2.5 years, which is the amortization period based on the cost of ink cartridges for the MG7150.
15 days after the purchase.
The printer prints slowly (more than 5 minutes for the Windows test page). It took me an afternoon to figure it out after extensive searching on the Internet. It turned out that the drivers included in the installation package recommended by the instructions are faulty. I had to clean the installation from the computer, download a package from Canon that only contains drivers (newer than the recommended package), then install the initial package to add various additional programs. This created a second installation of the printer, which I later deleted, and everything is fine.
Very good printer for economical printing.
The package includes 3 black pigment inks and 3 color inks. During installation, only one black ink is used, so the other two are left for future use.
The installation was easy, but its screen will appear small to many and does not light up. You can now print through a computer or mobile/tablet, so it was not a problem for me. It also has clear instructions inside to get started.
It does not have an ADF for automatic scanning of multiple pages, but it has automatic double-sided printing, which is very convenient. Also, the paper feed is through a cassette or from the back of the printer.
I will also print photos (with the appropriate photo paper) to see the quality of the prints.
Verified purchase
Very good machine for all uses.
