Description

Is there science for this very science? The author of the book attempts to answer this fundamental epistemological question regarding Immunology. It is a story of problematic nature with the focus on immunity, as the structural concept of Immunology, and the reciprocal relationship it has had over time with the classical biological issue of identity.

In order to detect the broader conceptual framework of Immunology, the author expands his problematic, naturally and where necessary, into the fields of sociology and philosophy of Science. In this way, on the one hand, the unprecedented historical dynamics of the transformation of immunological concepts are highlighted, and on the other hand, the need and prospect of developing new theories are outlined. The evolution of the concept of immunological "self", the emergence of the concepts of degeneration and natural immune memory, the re-examination of cognitive immunological theories, the interaction with developmental biology, and the formation of new branches - such as Systemic Immunology, Eco-immunology, and Immunology of big data - are representative subjects of the book's theme.

Moreover, the book presents, for the first time to experts in the field, a comprehensive picture of the development and use of immunological discourse, as well as the influences that Immunology has exerted on the humanities and social sciences. As a result of all these, the book serves the increasingly urgent need for a more comprehensive understanding of the issues that Immunology will face in the near future, as its boundaries with neighboring sciences become increasingly vague every day.
