Did you find this review helpful?What can one say about this book? I read it upon a friend's recommendation, half during summer vacation and half after I returned, as it is quite long (about 540 pages).
Regarding the plot, the protagonist named Chionis, a Spartan-like assistant of Dieneke, known for his response "better, we will fight in the shade" when told that the Medes' archers are so numerous that their arrows hide the sun, is saved by King Xerxes' doctors after the battle at Thermopylae. He is severely wounded.
Xerxes wants to learn about the customs of the Spartans from the Greek assistant, something that Chionis takes on after a vision, where he saw the god Apollo commanding him to do so.
Chionis, who found himself in Lacedaemon as a free man but not a citizen, as he comes from Astakos in Aetolia-Acarnania, which was destroyed by the enemies of the Spartan Argives, chooses Sparta from where he will one day avenge the Argives for the harm they did to his city.
Through Chionis' narrations, we go through the preparations of the Spartans for the upcoming war with the Persians, such as the campaign against Antirrio, 6 years before Thermopylae.
The final result is so realistic and the scenes so vivid that they astonish.Rating 10/10 - I recommend it to everyone.

Did you find this review helpful?Awesome book. It requires a little attention in terms of being a novel and some things are not exactly accurate. However, as far as the basic elements surrounding the battle, almost everything is as it happened. The way it presents the story is quite nice because it makes you understand exactly how people lived in that era, both Spartans and other Greeks, as well as Persians. There were moments in the chapters that were about the battle where I felt like I was there too. Sometimes I would pause and try to realize what incredible scenes unfolded at Thermopylae and what kind of people the ancient Greeks were, if one considers them humans and not gods. I also classify this book as one that every man should definitely read. It emphasizes values that a man should have and reminds them in very dangerous times for true masculinity that we live in...
