Description

After signing the Treaty of Sevres, the assassination attempt and his defeat in the elections, exiled in Paris, Eleftherios Venizelos decided to translate Thucydides. [...] His translation was done without the complex of the specialist philologist who, out of fear that he might miss some verbal form of the original, does not care whether he will corner the reader in some awkward wording that will interrupt his train of thought, thus for the right to enjoy what one of the greatest writers of our civilization offers you. He rendered Thucydides' Greek into his own Greek. In the language he spoke and thought. Today we call this language "plain Katharevousa". Venizelos' Thucydides is the proof, one of the proofs, that refute the arguments of our linguistic Manichaeism. He condemned Katharevousa as an artificial language. Our education has exiled it, ignoring that significant works of our literature, thus an important chapter of our own civilization, have been written in Katharevousa. And when a language can create literature, it is not only artificial. The rendering of Thucydides by Eleftherios Venizelos is one of the literary monuments of modern Greece.

(from the introductory note by Takis Theodoropoulos)

The political history of Thucydides is certainly a Greek invention. It is about the search for power in the relationships of societies, but especially in the city-state, an ideal cradle for the development of civilization. Dedication to the spirit of the city presupposes a citizen's faith, a faith relative to the Christian faith in the immortality of the soul. Without this dedication, Plato and Aristotle could not have devoted some of their most important works to the good of the state.

Did Venizelos translate Thucydides into monotonic? It is doubtful. Here in the book, we have Katharevousa that is even simpler than the simple. In other words, it is simple Katharevousa but without accents and spirits. The issue of language is considered of great importance in this edition. It would be useful, therefore, if this language were printed on the pages of the book exactly as it was/written.

The entire work of Thucydides in an exceptionally comprehensible translation by El. Venizelos. A meticulously crafted edition.
