The inspiration for the book "Athens - an invisible city" came from a long journey through the Balkans and Central Europe. When he returned and we met to discuss his impressions, it was the first time that the joy of the trip was overshadowed by a veil of pessimistic frustration.
"I can't take it anymore," he said to me, "I can't bear it. I will write a book about Athens, to describe how much the city I grew up in, loved, and hurt has wounded me, and how it has reached this tragic point. During my journey, I visited dozens of cities. None, no matter how poor or neglected, had this sad image that our Athens has in its heart. Perhaps it is time for us to make our aesthetic - quality of real life - revolution."
They say that hatred usually hides on the backside of great love. And George loves Athens passionately.
