The 1930s were the decade of the previous major crisis of capitalism, unemployment, and poverty. The outbreak of the Spanish revolution in July 1936 fueled the hopes of an entire generation of socialists. After the imposition of fascist regimes in Italy, Germany, Austria, and Portugal, the contradiction of the workers in Spain was living proof that fascism can be defeated.
In Spain, for the first time in years, an alternative way out was visible. The socialist revolution. The workers took collective control of production. In the neighborhoods, the workers' committees had control over the distribution of goods. In the villages, the farmers occupied the farms and cultivated them collectively.
